William Rowland 1820 - 1880

Our founder… 1820: William Rowland born in Sheffield to Jonathon and Mary Rowland. 1843: William Rowland the ironmonger marries Sarah Drewsnap. 1845: The first of the couple’s seven children is born. 1880: Tragedy strikes on 11th August when William Rowland died after being accidentally struck by a hammer earlier in July of the same year. Our company… 1830: Jonathon Rowland began an ironmonger business in Sheffield naming it after his son, William Rowland. 1852: William Rowland’s ironmonger business expands, and he becomes an ironmonger and wire dealer. 1871: William Rowland becomes an iron and steel merchant. Our premises… 1825: Original site, 9 Meadow Street, Sheffield occupied by R.H. Hilliard table knife and razor manufacturer. 1851: William Rowland listed as ironmonger at these premises. 1861: William Rowland moves out of the property, which becomes his business premises, home is now 66, Morpeth Street, Sheffield. 1861: William Rowland expanded into tinning and brazing. 1871: To complement his ironmongery, tinning and brazing business William Rowland expands once again and moves into wire dealing. William Rowland was an entrepreneurial businessman, and was among the first to import a consignment of Swedish iron into Sheffield. In 2010 some 180 years after the company was first founded, William Rowland Limited has grown to become a reputable importer and exporter of metal supplies worldwide.
