Copper & Zinc - Metal For New Solar Batteries

Researchers in Japan from the Kanazawa Institute of Technology have developed a solar battery that is able to convert energy from sunlight using copper oxide at a rate of 3.26%.

Research into the solar battery first began in the US in 1982, and the further workings have managed to more than double the energy conversion rate. It is suggested that the battery could potentially become widely used due to the safety and abundance of the primary materials, copper and zinc, used to create the batteries.

As copper and zinc are readily available, cheap and safe for human contact they are the perfect materials for the newly discovered batteries. Researchers continue to develop this new technology and aim to reach an energy conversion rate between 5% and 10%. They hope to achieve this by using amorphous silicon within the batteries to heighten energy rates in preparation of their popularity once on the market.
