Copper Mine Workers Strike At Codelco

William Rowland are a leading supplier of Copper.

For the first time in nearly two decades, Codelco closed for 24 hours for a national strike due to disagreements between management and unions over restructuring plans at the business.

Chile's state controlled copper molybdenum mine lost $40 million because of the closure and 4,600 tonnes of copper. Last month, Codelco lost thousands of tonnes of copper and $100 million after violent protests by subcontractors disrupted operations at the El Teniente site.

Also last month, the workers blocked roads leading to the Chuquicamata mine demanding talks over the potential layoffs brought by the company's restructure.

There are plans to extend the life of the Chuquicamata site by converting it to an underground mine, however the copper output is expected to halve to 300,000 tonnes but to increase back to current levels by 2020.

William Rowland Ltd are copper suppliers, and if you would like to find out how we can meet your requirements, please contact us using the Quick Enquiry Form on the right-hand side of this website.
