Long awaited arrival of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner

After a delay of roughly two years the long awaited for arrival of Boeing's 787 "Dreamliner" at the Farnborough airshow was the cause of plenty of excitement amongst the media and plane spotters alike.

The aircraft has been described by Thomson Airways, who will the first UK based airline to have the 787 as part of its longhaul fleet in 2012, as "the greatest advance for air passengers since the development of Concorde".

The 787 Dreamliner will feature an increased use of advanced lightweight aluminum alloys and titanium graphite laminates. It will also be the world's first commercial jetliner with an airframe made of carbon fibre composite rather than aluminum. Reports say that by using a one-piece fuselage section Boeing's engineers have eliminated the need for approximately 1,500 aluminum sheets and 40,000 to 50,000 fasteners.

By making use of a composite material the 787 will use approximately 20 per cent less fuel than today's commercial aircrafts, which will dramatically reduce its fuel and maintenance costs.
