Nickel Powders and Applications

William Rowland are a leading supplier of Nickel.

Nickel powders are used in a variety of applications, such as Electro-Magnetic Shielding (EMS) and energy storage (e.g. in batteries). Nickel carbonyl gas can be decomposed under a number of different production parameters to produce nickel powders suitable for use in PM, magnetic and chemical applications.

The resulting metal powders can be supplied in a range of sizes and morphologies to suit differing end-user requirements.

Type 123 Spherical Powders are developed primarily for PM applications and consist of fine, discrete, spherical particles with a spiky, irregular surface. This powder is characterized by Average Particle sizes of 3-7 µ FSSS; Apparent Densities of 1.6-2.6 g/cc; and Specific Surface Areas (BET) of about 0.4m²/g. The unique and reproducible shape of this powder promotes mixing and binding with other metal powders to produce homogeneous distributions important to diffusion and consolidation by sintering to produce high density PM parts for auto parts, high purity magnetic and controlled expansion alloys, nonferrous sintered components, electrical contacts, and binders for diamond tools and heavy alloys.

Type 255 Filamentary Powders exhibit excellent conductivity due to the ‘bead and chain' structures typically 2.2-3.3μ cross-section and more than 15μ in length. Apparent Density values range from 0.50-0.95 g/cc and Specific Surface Area values can be varied between 0.6 and 8.0m²/g. These low apparent density powders find applications in battery and fuel cell electrodes, to render conductivity to non-metallic materials such as paints and plastics used in Electromagnetic Shielding (EMS) applications, and as non-magnetic and corrosion-resistant binders in refractory metal cermets e.g. hardmetals.
