Molybdenum in Constructional Engineering Steels and Stainless Steels

In 2009 approximately 21,200 tonnes of molybdenum were used across the globe. Constructional engineering and stainless steel sectors dominate with 60% of total usage. Although engineering steels typically use less the 1% Mo, more often 0.1 to 0.2% Mo, where the tonnages produced are enormous.

Molybdenum Suppliers Increase Export to China

China was once a major exporter of molybdenum, peaking at around 74 million lbs in 2004. Since then, exports have declined year on year, and in 2009 it became a net importer of the metal, taking around 65 million lbs more than it exported.

IMOA appointment

Mark Wilson of Thompson Creek has been appointed President of IMOA - The International Molybdenum Association. Mr Wilson will take over from Victor Perez of Codelco.

LME Prepares for new Metals Contracts

The LME is currently preparing to launch the world’s first cobalt and molybdenum futures contracts that will commence trading on the exchange on Monday 22nd February.

LME Contracts near for Cobalt and Molybdenum

With metals traders eagerly preparing themselves for the upcoming LME week, two of the first minor metal contracts to be introduced for commencement in 2010 will be for molybdenum and cobalt.
