Applications of Nickel

Nickel is useful in many applications due to its numerous desirable properties including corrosion resistance, durability and availability.

Nickel is relatively important and a widely used constituent in alloy steels. It is best known to be a solid solution strengthener and is used in 300 different grades of stainless steels. It also provides the basics to create many extensive super alloys that are resistant to heat, oxidation and corrosion. Wrought steels, including stainless steel are responsible for the harden-ability agent. Nickel's presence in alloy steels also promotes toughness at lower temperatures.

Discovery Of Europe’s Largest Nickel Deposit By Anglo-American In Sakattilampi

It has been reported that Anglo-American has discovered Europe's largest nickel deposit in the Sakattilampi district, north of the town Sodankylä in Finnish Lapland.

Test drillings have found ore samples with as much as 4% nickel content, but it is also reported that there is plenty of copper here too, as well as gold and palladium. The exploration of the area has already acquired a combined depth of 28km of drill holes. It is thought that the deposit stretches down almost a kilometre and contains pyrites; Anglo-American plan to employ 150 workers to double the number of drill holes to see just how wide / deep the deposit is.

Seasonal Flood Causes Suspension For Norilsk Nickel

The seasonal suspension of loading operations at Dudinka sea port in Russia were in effect after water levels reached their peak and caused all port operations to grind to a halt. The suspension of loading operations at Dudinka port takes place annually in May and lasts approximately one month, causing disruption to the nickel suppliers.

Nickel Powders and Applications

Nickel powders are used in a variety of applications, such as Electro-Magnetic Shielding (EMS) and energy storage (e.g. in batteries). Nickel carbonyl gas can be decomposed under a number of different production parameters to produce nickel powders suitable for use in PM, magnetic and chemical applications.

Top Five Things to Look for in a Nickel or Nickel Alloy Supplier

When choosing a nickel or nickel alloy supplier, there are many factors to consider; however, these are the five that we at William Rowland consider to be the most important...

The Popularity of Nickel in Industry

Nickel is the fifth most common element, after iron, oxygen, silicon and magnesium, and its extremely high melting point of 1453˚C, combined with its good alloying ability, have made it very popular in forming heat-and-creep-resistant alloys for the chemical and aerospace industries.

Economic Boom Forecast as Open Cut Nickel Mine Licence in Tasmania is Granted

According to reports by Proto Resources Chairman Andrew Mortimer, the mine is said to have a lifetime of up to 16 years and could produce around 250,000 tonnes of nickel per year, and the project could also create around 100 jobs.

Tests Successful for New Nickel Powder Technology

Russian metal giants, Norilsk Nickel have finished developing, and are now looking to implement a new form of technology for manufacturing nickel powders.

With profit optimisation and carbon footprint reduction at the forefront of their design, Norilsk Nickel have spent the past few months developing the new technology which will be used as a reagent in electrolyte purification and making cement copper.

Norilsk Nickel Announces Plunge in Profit

Russia's largest base and precious metals miner Norilsk Nickel have seen its net profit in the first six months of 2009 plunge 84% from the previous year, according to a recent statement released by the company.
