High Purity Materials

Germanium

Germanium's main uses are mostly for fiber-optic systems, infrared optics, polymerization catalysts, and for electronics and solar electric applications. A smaller quantity of the amount produced is also has uses in phosphors, metallurgy and chemotherapy.

Indium

Indium's main uses lie in the electronics and metal and alloy industries. In the form of a wire it is used as a vacuum seal and a thermal conductor in cryogenics and ultra-high vacuum applications, eg. in manufacturing gaskets which deform to fill gaps.

Tellurium

The highest consumption of tellurium is from metallurgy where it is used in iron, copper and lead alloys.

Tellurium is added to stainless steel and copper in order to make the metals more machinable. It is also alloyed into cast iron for promoting chill for spectroscopic purposes as the presence of electrically conductive free graphite tends to deleteriously effect spark emission testing results.

In lead it can improve strength and durability whilst decreasing the corrosive action of sulfuric acid.
