Quality

The Company has demonstrated its commitment to high-quality metals and metal powders over many years.

In 1988 both sites were amongst the first companies to be approved by BSI Quality Assurance to the Registered Stockist Scheme.

Further enhancement of policy and procedures led to upgrading of both the Sheffield and Birmingham sites to BS 5750 Part 2:1987 in 1992 and to ISO 9002:1994 in 1995.

At the July 2003 review our BSI QA client manager recommended William Rowland Ltd. for upgrade to BS EN ISO 9001:2000. (A further step forward in our commitment to Quality).

We have now been approved for upgrade to the new BSI standard 9001:2008, after our first assesment on 13th March 2009.

We are one of the first as the new standard was only published on 14th November 2008, and to retain BSI approval, successful assesments are to be done by 31st December 2009.

Reach

In June 2007 REACH - Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals came into force. Our guideline to the REACH process is outlined below.

What is the purpose of REACH?
REACH is designed to streamline the process of regulating all domestic and industrial chemicals within the EU by replacing several pieces of existing legislation.

Why is the REACH process required?
The new regulation makes the manufacturer or importer more responsible for assessing and managing risk of the materials that they sell.

How does REACH work?
In order to comply with the new regulation when producing or importing more than one metric tonne per year of REACH regulated substances, a registration dossier has to be filed by the manufacturer or importer at the newly created European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) central database in Helsinki. This dossier details the chemicals involved and their known associated hazards.

Who will benefit from REACH?
The collated data will help the ECHA determine the risks of all regulated substances and any gaps filled by further testing. Eventually it is hoped that the most dangerous substances will be substituted with safer alternatives. Manufacturers or importers can then inform downstream users of the risks of supplied substances in order to allow for safe usage.

How will William Rowland comply with the REACH process?
William Rowland Ltd is fully committed to the EU 'REACH' legislation. Having completed the pre-registration phase, we remain in a position to continue the supply of metals and metal powders whilst being fully compliant. We are now working towards full registration.
