Nickel, Aluminium, Copper and Magnesium are used extensively in the automotive industry. Aluminium primarily because of its malleability and light weight nature is often found in wheels and engine blocks. Copper wiring is needed to carry data, send signal controls and supply electrical power. Copper alloyed with nickel is resistant to corrosion from salt leading to its use within brake tubing. Nickel is used in a variety of forms; nickel based alloys can be found in spark plugs, diesel valves, thermostats and turbochargers. Nickel containing alloys such as steel are used in the gears and drive shafts. Nickel chrome alloys are used in the interior and exterior trims, door handles, seatbelt fasteners, grills and wheels. Nickel in powder form is also used for the gears, magnets and airbag valves.

Magnesium was previously generally used only in die cast parts, however its low density and high strength has in recent years caused it to see a spike in popularity due to the drive toward lower weight and higher efficiency vehicles.

A wide variety of metal powders are used via powder metallurgy within a vehicle These can be found in items such as spark plugs, valve seats & valve guides, turbochargers, flywheels and crank shafts. Automotive powder metallurgy produced components are quite possibly the major user of metal powders from any industrial segment – an average weight per vehicle for parts manufactured from metal powder is 25 – 28kg per vehicle.
